Bringing cash into Brazil?

ree

There is a recent change of cash control limit. Before the limit amount was R$ 10.000,00 (ten thousand Brazilian Reals), now it is US$ 10.000,00 (ten thousand United States Dollars), which is a huge difference considering the currency between Reals and Dollar.

Each person can transport amounts of cash or currency or monetary instruments into or out of Brazil. But anyone carrying more than US$ 10,000.00 (ten thousand United States Dollars) must declare the amount by filing a report. The report can be filled by an electronic form called e-DMOV (“Declaração de Movimentação Internacional de Valores”), which is the declaration for the cross-border transportation of cash.

Please be aware that any person of legal age (+18 years old, regardless of residence and nationality) who transports cash more than the limit cash, either on their own behalf or on behalf of a third party (individual or company), is subject to the declaration obligation. Minors must make the declaration through their parents or legal guardians.

In case the traveler needs more cash, international cards are widely accepted in Brazil, inclusive to withdraw Reals directly from ATMs.
